Board games are fun and help develop many traits -- mainly competitiveness. For many, board games keep us sharp. Board games are serious leisure, and not to be taken too lightly. At the end of the day, the key is to have fun -- above all else.

Board games without fun are not worth playing. These five board games deliver the fun.

A Trivial Pursuit Memory: Of Pursuit and Volvos

It was 1984 (I think), and I was just smart and weird enough -- and my mom divorced enough -- that when my mom got together with her church friends, they became my friends, too. One Sunday afternoon -- as so often occurred that year -- we all sat in one of our social group's living rooms enjoying a lively game of Trivial Pursuit.

The game was being played in teams -- male v. female. I do not recall who was winning at the time of the occurrence I wish to retell. I do not recall which side was the victor.

What remains in my memory is the asking and answering of a question which went down something like this:

-- Question (asked by the males of the females) -- In 1980 (I think), how many mustard yellow cars did Volvo sell?

My mom's face turned pseudo-sour as she ingested the query. Her teammates hemmed and hawed.

It should be mentioned for attempted historical reference, that in those years Volvo sold a putrid yellow color that made many an onlooker gawk as it passed -- or more accurately, as it sat on the lot as you passed it. And so it should be stated, everyone in the game knew of which Volvos the question asked.

Minutes passed as my mom and her team debated what to guess, and wondered how this sadistic question could not be multiple choice. To be sure, we men -- okay, I was but 13 -- felt there would be no credit given for a correct answer in this case.

Finally, a guess from the girls -- "Let's say seven-hundred-something. Okay, what's the something? Well, the year in the question is 1980, so let's say, seven..."

I wish to include here that as we guys who had looked at the back of the Trivial Pursuit card heard the guess was going to be seven-hundred-anything, our eyes widened. You see, the answer on the card's back was "719" (again, as I recall). Still, surely -- I thought -- since the opposing team was drawing their guess from the year in the question, we were safe.

Surely, the women would go for 780. Alas, the anomaly was my mom. I say to you humbly, Mother's decisions cannot be predicted.

The guess from my mother, speaking for the team, "Oh! Oh! (blurting) 719!"

Mother, what a riddle!
